Dons / ATO memorial
Hello to all brothers of the Dons & Zeta Mu:
Brothers Roy Harper, Mac Woodward & Webbo Melder visited with SHSU officials last week regarding the placement of our Dons / ATO memorial on campus. An alternative site ( not in the alumni garden ) on the right side of the sidewalk leading to the Administration Building. & President's Office (at the crossroads intersection of the new bell tower being constructed) is our first choice. We hope to have a memorial design from Brother Harper soon for SHSU to approve.
As per the unamamous decision by the Alumni Association at the 7th Annual Reunion to " let's get it built "....we are doing so. The memorial will include both the Dons & ATOs. Roy & I discussed the idea of " lighting " it at night.Brothers, this is exciting for all of us. Now is the time to mail your memorial fund donation if you have not done so and to "consider" an additional donation if you already have. May Brother Harper be truly blessed in his efforts to achieve a design that will have no equal, and may all the brothers who have shared the Dons & ATO crests enjoy its creation for now and from above when one day we will all assemble in the Chapter Eternal.
We will keep you updated on the project as we progress. Please pass this on to "all" brothers. May the good lord continue to bless each of you.Take care ...... See you at the memorial dedication if not sooner.
With love & respect,
Vtl, Webbo
Donations for the Dons/ATO Memorial Monument to be located on the SHSU campus can be made out to ATO with the reference “Memorial Fund" and mailed to either:

Texas Zeta Mu House Update
See February 20, 2005 Chapter Housing MEMO
At the Reunion last April, George Yax, President of the Zeta Mu Alumni Association appointed me to chair a committee to develop a plan to secure a house for the Chapter and a location for a Memorial. The Alumni Association felt it was critical to 1) locate a permanent Memorial on the SHSU campus instead of at the Trail's End Ranch; 2) purchase or assist in leasing a temporary lodge/house for the Chapter's use before Fall 2004 and 3) develop a plan for a suitable permanent lodge/house facility.
House Committee
The following have volunteered to serve or have been impressed into service on the committee:
- Webb Melder - Real Estate Brokerage Advisor
- Mac Woodward - Huntsville Market Advisor
- Roy Harper - Architectural Advisor
- Jack Douglas - Greek Housing Advisor
- Robert Hutson - Financing Advisor
- Terry Schwertner - Insurance Advisor
- Open - Legal Advisor
- Open - Accounting Advisor
- Nick Savarino, Worthy Master - Undergraduate Member
- Andrew Anderson, Immediate Past Worthy Master - Undergraduate Member
- Darrin Tharp - Undergraduate Member
Temporary Lodge/House
The City of Huntsville, either by deed restriction enforcement or "zoning", has limited the areas of the city in which fraternities can locate. The undergraduates have been searching for a suitable lodge/house for several months and have found that there is a limited market. We have contacted Markham Realty and I have viewed one of their listings. Although it was located on a 1.9 acre tract within 2 miles of campus, it was 30+ years old and I was concerned about its suitability and condition. David Markham is checking the available listings for a storefront, metallic building or house for us to consider. In the meantime, the undergraduates may have found a house about 10 miles from town which they may rent.
Permanent Lodge/House
I met with Bird Harper last week and gave him a concept for an "ATO Village". He and I will develop a draft to submit to the committee for their input and then submit it to the Association for consideration.Next Step
If anyone has any suggestions or may know of property in Huntsville, please let me know. When we are ready to move forward, we will need to create a legal entity such as a limited partnership or housing corporation. Do we have an attorney within our Association or does one of you own an attorney? We will also need someone with experience in real estate investment accounting. If the proposal reaches approval, we hope to create an entity to develop a permanent house which would provide a tax advantaged, real estate investment for interested alums while providing a first class house for the chapter including a Memorial Room.Memorial
Webb Melder, Roy Harper and Mac Woodward are working with SHSU for a memorial to our past brothers at a strategic location on campus. Details will be forwarded as they are finalized.
Love and Respect,
Rico Hanna -

Social in lieu of a December BOT meeting
At the November BOT it was suggested that we have a social gathering in lieu of a December BOT meeting. Aaron suggested that we find a casual facility with games. After an exhaustive search
I hereby call a meeting of all interested Zeta Mu Brothers for 6:00pm +/- on Wednesday, December
8, 2004 at Wolfies Restaurant & Sports Bar located at 25550
Interstate 45 Spring, TX 77386-1341. Their phone number is 281-298-WOLF.
Take the Rayford-Sawdust exit (Mile Marker 76) which is the south end of The Woodlands and head north on the feeder road passing the Long John Silvers and turn east into the parking lot between the Tile Outlet store and the Firestone store. Wolfies is at the right rear of the parking lot.
They have appetizers, burgers, mud bugs, sandwiches, wings, fajitas, cold beer, a bar, pool tables and big screen TVs. For those of you that think you know how to play shuffleboard, my partner and I will be pleased to take your ass to school. Some wanted to bring wives, while others wanted to bring girlfriends. I say let your conscious be your guide but don't bring both. Don't be surprised if you bring your girlfriend and find your wife there as someone's girlfriend.

2004 SHSU Homecoming Two-Bit Tailgate Cook-Off
Saturday, October 16, 2004, serving 11am to 2pm or while mugs last
presented by the Fall 2004 ATO Pledge Class
Hal Kooken , Two-Bit Chairman
Purpose
- To encourage attendance at the Homecoming Tailgate party.
- To increase fun and fellowship.
- To test the potential for a future campus-wide contest.
- To establish the tradition of a fundraiser by the Fall Pledge class.
- To unseat Roy “Bird” Harper as “Reigning ATO Cook”.
Contest
Brother Leon Childers is providing (at a very reasonable cost) 144 collectable, judging coffee mugs for the Fall 2004 Pledge Class to sell for $5 each to the general public. Cooking teams representing various decades of ATO Pledge classes will be preparing their choice of tailgate party fare (such as chili, gumbo, soup, BBQ, sausage, etc.) and serving a portion to the fee paying judges. Each judge will be issued an official ballot token to vote for the team which, in the judge’s sole opinion, services the best product and promotion. Each team will be provided a 6-foot +/- table along the edge of the hospitality tent from which to serve to the 144 Judges as they circulate between teams. The teams will be responsible for providing at least 144 servings of their fare; all their cooking equipment; cooking enclosure; 144 spoon, fork, skewer, chop-stick or other necessary service utensil; and a 1-gallon plastic milk or water jug or similar container into which the ballot token may be deposited. (Most teams can get by with a 1-cup size ballot box.) Hal Kooken and the Fall 2004 Pledge Class will have sole authority to select the 2004 Two-Bit Tailgate Cook-Off Champion. Hopefully, Brother Childers will provide a suitable, enviable, trophy.
Rules
Let your conscious be your guide. You must comply with City Health regulations as far as safe serving temperatures, clean area including wash water. If in doubt, contact Richy Serrill - . ATO Risk Management policy will be in effect (no promotion of alcoholic beverages - i.e. no beer signs or unsupervised distribution of alcohol, in other words use your best discretion).

BOT Meeting
Minutes of September 20, 2004 Board of Trustees meeting
SHSU Homecoming 2004
Saturday, October 16, 2004 - Tailgating: 11am, game: 2pm
Carlos has a conflict this year and will not be able to have the Mexican
Microwave Fajita machine. Instead, Hal Kooken will set up a tent
in the Tailgate area at Bowers Stadium and coordinate a small contest. It would be great if
you would captain a team of guys from your era. I have ordered 150 coffee mugs from Brother Leon
Childers with an appropriate commemorative design and hope to have 6-10 teams cooking
something that can be served in a mug (i.e. chili, soup, stew, gumbo, grilled chicken; sausage-on-a-stick-in-a-mug,
egg rolls, etc.). You would need to prepare enough to serve 150 portions. The Fall Pledge Class
will sell the mugs for $5 each for a worthy ATO fundraiser and the public will meander from
team to team getting a free sample. Each mug will also have a ballot token for the 150 judges
to cast and the team receiving the most votes wins. You will need to provide your own cooking
shelter, supplies and gear including a serving utensil for the public (i.e. spoon, chopstick,
straw, etc.). If anyone else want to enter a team, please let me know.

Wynn:
Robert Hurst has stepped down as Chairman of the BOT due to the elimination of his position with the Houston Police Department and subsequent move to far always Dallas. Additionally, our Faculty Advisor, Amber, has decided to continue her maternity leave and be a stay at home mom. During our meeting we deliberated the best structure to propose a new board for your consideration. We wanted to bring new blood onto the board, but all of the old blood wanted to stay involved. It was decided to expand the BOT by two additional slots. The by-laws will be amended to reflect the change. Richard Serrill is an alumnus of the Zeta Mu chapter and has recently taken the position as General Manager of the University Hotel, thereby qualifying him as a member of the University staff. Ultimately, it was decided that I serve as Chairman and one of the Founding Fathers of the Re-Chartering Colony, Scott Hagan, serve as Vice-Chairman. We respectfully request that you appoint the attached list as the Zeta Mu Board of Trustees to serve at your pleasure. Thank you.
The next Board of Trustees meeting will be held at 6pm on Monday, October 11 at the University Hotel to coincide with Kirby’s visit with the Chapter. If anyone has any agenda items, please send them to me so that I can add them to the Agenda. Brother Hagan will send out the Agenda and minutes from the previous meeting a couple of weeks prior to the meeting.

Sympathy Note sent to Ole Miss chapter
Dear ATO Brothers at Ole Miss (Delta Psi):
On behalf of the Zeta Mu Board of Trustees, I would like to express my condolences and sympathy for
our Brothers at Ole Miss. The news was relayed quickly to all of our alumni and undergraduates from
Sam Houston State (Zeta Mu) once the initial reports were posted on the Internet. Words cannot describe
the shock and sorrow we felt for our Brothers and their families. Please know that our thoughts and
prayers are with all of the men of Delta Psi, their families, friends and classmates. If there is
anything that the men of Zeta Mu can do for our Brothers at Delta Psi in this time of sorrow, please
let us know. Although we are in Texas, we will be there for our Brothers when called upon for help.
With deepest sympathies,

Comedy Tau
Brother Rodney Hood - Southern Illinois called to let me know that he is on tour with his "Chemically Imbalanced Comedy" sketch comedy show and would love for you to come out and catch his act. Currently he's touring on the Eastern third of the county doesn't have any Texas gigs lined up in the near future. In the mean time, you can check out Rodney on his Chemically Imbalanced Comedy website.

Brother Webbo Melder defeated opponent Bill Cochran by a final vote count of 645 votes (59%) to 465 votes (42%) percent)... "This was a complete team effort," said Melder. "This was not about an I, this was about a team." The Courier: Melder wins runoff - June 13, 2004
Andy DiMambro - Study Abroad
Brothers:
I am writing this letter on behalf of one of the graduates from our recently re-chartered Chapter. Andy
DiMambro, who served as the first president of the Colony, graduated
in May of 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice. While in college, he was a Resident
Assistant in his dorm where he recruited several members for the Colony and helped the Colony get
its Charter.
While working on his Masters degree, he has been accepted into and has registered for a Study Abroad program for credit through the Criminal Justice Center that will take place in Poland. Andy has been working two jobs to save money for this once in a lifetime opportunity. He anticipates the following expenses: Room and board $1200; Flight just under $1300; Tuition $700; Passport $80 and miscellaneous expenses $200 for a total of about $3500.
So far, a number of brothers have contributed to his "scholarship" fund. Andy still needs additional financial assistance and if you could see your way to send help his way, it would be greatly appreciated. As I explained to Andy, this is not a gift, but a loan. I expect that someday he will return the favor to another ATO in need. Please contact Andy or even better, contribute online via PayPal

Zeta Mu Memorial / House Committee
At the Texas Zeta Mu Alumni Association meeting held during the 7th Annual
Reunion and Hog Hunt, the members assembled voted overwhelmingly to assist the undergraduate
Chapter with some form of housing. Currently, the brothers live in dorm rooms, apartments or
individual houses. Chapter meetings are held at 8:00 pm on Monday nights on the third floor of
the Lowman Student Center. The lack of a house not only makes recruitment difficult but, more
importantly, adversely impacts the fellowship for these men by not having a central meeting place
and "home".
The undergraduates will be working on a proposal describing the type of lodge or house that they
believe would most benefit the growth and health of the Chapter. Scott Hagan and
I attended the Chapter meeting last week and explained to them that we need them to research what
other fraternities have and provide an overview of the current housing market including average
dorm, apartment and house rents. The goal that was established at the Reunion was to have the Chapter
in a facility for fall recruitment. We will explore various options that were proposed and I hope
to have an action plan by the end of May.
Alumni Association President George Yax appointed me a Chairman of the
Memorial / House Committee to develop the plan. Please take a moment and reply
back to me with your thoughts on the direction we should take. We will need a legal
entity, such as a Housing Corporation, to be able to lease or purchase a facility. If you have
an area of expertise that you could provide or if you would be willing to serve on the committee
or ultimately on the House Corp, please let me know that also.
Webb Melder, Mac Woodward and Roy Harper are
working on a memorial monument to be erected on the SHSU campus. Our idea at the Reunion was to
provide for a Memorial Room at the Lodge/House which would include a plaque for Brothers that have
moved on to the Chapter Eternal. Mike Davis is working on a concept for an in-house
memorial.

Apple Pies
Brother Roy "Bird" Harper's World famous Apple Pies delight the Houston Chronicle's Ken Hoffman:
Single best thing I've eaten at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (so far): Texas Heritage's sky-high apple pie. You can buy it at the Holmes Smokehouse booth in Reliant Center's lobby. A whole pie weighs 6 pounds. No wonder: There are 14 big apples baked inside. The crust looks like Mount St. Helens erupting.
A slice costs $5. A scoop of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla costs $1.50 more.
Texas Heritage has a new product this year -- Pie in a Jar.
"Whenever a pie comes out of the oven and it's not a perfect Dolly Parton, we just throw it in a jar and seal it up," said chief piemaker Roy Harper.
"Everything's in there, the crust, the apples, the calories and all the sin. You can eat it walking around the rodeo or take it home and eat it six months from now."
Taus Who Ride:
Brother David Matocha ZM '78 is looking for ATO's who are interested in riding the 2004 MS150 Houston-Austin Bicycle Tour. This 180+ mile, charity bicycle tour raises money to help fight Multiple Sclerosis. Do you know of any ATOs who ride? Currently we know that the following brothers are planning to pedal:

Walden Spring Clean & Catfish Fling
I am finalizing the details for a Zeta Mu project. Now it's time to ask for help. For the last few semesters, I have paid some of the undergraduate ATOs to help clean up my yard in Walden on Lake Conroe. The subdivision, located about ten miles west of Conroe off SH 105, has been promoting the theme of beautifying the neighborhood. I suggested, as a community service project, that the Chapter would help by recycling tree limbs, clippings and yard debris on March 27 from 11am to 5pm in the parking lot at the Walden Community Church at 12400 Walden Road. In conjunction with the clean-up, I have asked members of the Friday Nite Fryers to provide a catfish lunch from 11am to 2pm.
Proceeds from the meal and donations from residents will be combined to form the SHSU ATO Leadership Scholarship to be administered by the Zeta Mu Board of Trustees. My goal is to provide a scholarship for Montgomery High School senior(s) that will be attending SHSU. The MISD has been very supportive of the concept. Sam Houston graduates make up a large percentage of the MISD staff. Kevin Hayes, Director of the Office of Alumni Relations at Sam Houston will be here with door prizes. I hope that this will be a pilot program that can be carried to other communities.
Scott Hagan has "volunteered" to serve as Vice-Chairman for Clean-up. He will be making arrangements for a chipping machine. If you have any contacts with a company that could provide a commercial chipping machine, please let him know. We hope to have trucks and/or trailers to be able to pick up materials from homeowners that don't have a means of transporting their clippings. If you can help Scott please send him an e-mail at scott@scotthagan.com. As I recall, James "Cuz" Chandler had volunteered his riding-around services as there are no cows (but lots of deer) roaming the streets of Walden. His son, who plans to start at SHSU in the fall, may also be in attendance.
Lyndsey DeLange has "volunteered" to serve as Vice-Chairman for Pre-Sale Tickets. The school district will promote the event though their e-mail bulletin board. We plan to have a volunteer available at each campus to collect ticket money. The Walden Community Association Office has also agreed to help by selling tickets and publicizing the event in our monthly newsletter.
I need a Vice-Chairman for the ATO Cooking Team. Webbo Melder, as you may have heard, is involved with his campaign for a Council seat for the City of Conroe and may not be able to attend. If he does show, he will be an Assistant Fry Cook-Short Order. Vernon's Kuntry Katfish restaurant will be providing the catfish fillets, chicken tenders, spices, flour, cornmeal, buttermilk, hushpuppies French fries and Cole slaw. If anyone knows someone that might donate peanut oil, please let me know. We would also like to provide pinto beans if there is anyone that can cook up a mess of them. My goal is to serve 1,000 meals. ATO policy provides that recruitment events must be alcohol-free and I'm sure the Church would not approve of alcoholic consumption on their grounds. However, I plan to hold a de-briefing after the event at La Piņata Mexican Restaurant in the shopping center just to the west of Walden Road on SH 105.
David Matocha is working on an ATO Cooking Team apron for heavy duty Fryers. When they are available, he will post the information on his website http://www.taugear.com/
This is an opportunity to showcase the Chapter, the ZM Alumni Association, The ATO Cooking Team and SHSU to Montgomery High School students. I realize that this is the weekend before the Hog Hunt and Reunion in Medina, but Spring Break for Sam and MISD prevented holding it any earlier this year. If you can help in anyway, please let me know.
Love & Respect,
Rico
