Plethora of new Mississippi laws take effect Friday

...Another law that took effect when Barbour signed it allows the state Fire Marshal's Office to inspect all fraternity and sorority houses on university campuses and require the installation of smoke and fire detectors. The bill also calls for the state's university system to conduct a feasibility study on the installation of water sprinklers.

The inspection law was written in response to a fire last Aug. 27 that killed three students in the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house on the University of Mississippi [web/ tickets/ eBay] campus. The new law raises safety standards of fraternity houses to the level of all other public buildings on campuses...

Ed's family and friends honored him on his "retirement" at his last gig at Lausanne. They donned "Ed the DJ" T-shirts, brought balloons and gifts, and presented him with a cake in his honor. It's been a long, enjoyable trip for the man who has spun thousands of tunes since he played his first record, The Gap Band's "You Drop a Bomb on Me," at his first gig at the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house at Indiana University in March 1983...

The days of decorating Homecoming banners, competing in Texas Hold 'em tournaments, and barbecuing at their red brick fraternity house are over for the eight remaining members of Alpha Tau Omega, which plans to sell their residence.

UI chapter Vice President Scott Murphy said membership has been so low that the group decided to sell the house... "Our board voted this last semester that, because we didn't have enough guys to fill the house next year, we couldn't afford it,"...

The participants were present to christen a new beginning, while still honoring a tragic past. Friday held a somber blessing of the grounds that once held the rubble of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house destroyed in a late-August fire last year...

Three students died in the fire, and the event echoed throughout the campus, state and nation for months. Support from the community and beyond poured into the campus during those months...

USC goes dry for 2005

When USC begins pursuit of a third consecutive national championship next fall, the Trojans want to make it a dry run. In a move announced Wednesday, the school plans to ban alcohol at its games at the Coliseum this season, a step USC president Steven Sample says is necessary to clean up increasingly unruly behavior and make Trojans games more family friendly...

"At least half of it," said sophomore Evan Geeb, as he carried his bicycle into the Alpha Tau Omega house. "You've got to go to games at least somewhat wasted -- it's all part of the experience. It'd be a bummer (to not buy alcohol), but it's not going to stop anybody. You'll hide it somewhere."...
