Treats, not tricks, for kids

Saturday's Trick-or-Treat on Greek Street appeared to be another success. By noon, the event... was well underway and children could be heard laughing from the Student Union patios....

Alpha Tau Omega... chose a Baywatch theme and offered kids a chance to save a drowning person by throwing a lifesaver around them for prizes and ice cream. The activity cost each participant $1, and all proceeds will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club...

Girardi fulfills his dreams

Thirty-five years before he became manager of the Florida Marlins, Joe Girardi was a scrappy 6-year-old determined to play ball with the big kids...

Girardi lived at the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house. Frat brother Jeff Schner remembers Girardi sitting in the corner on a beat-up couch, a baseball book covering his face. "I remember him reading The Science of Hitting," said Schner... "And in the chapter room every night he would swing a heavy bat to work on his swing"...

"When I gave the toast at his wedding, I said sometimes you run into people and they make people around them better," Schner said. "That's Joe. He brings out the best in people."

Trick or treat for spare change

Alpha Gamma Delta will host its annual "Trick or Treat for Spare Change" event... again this year. With the assistance of Alpha Tau Omega and Sigma Alpha Epsilon, the event will target local communities to assist in donations.

"The members of ATO join with members of SAE and AGD and go to different areas of the community to trick or treat, but instead of asking for candy, which is usually offered anyway, we ask for spare change," NDSU senior and ATO member, Trenton Mohl said...

Football player reinstated

Vandal offensive lineman Jade Tadvick has been reinstated to the University of Idaho football team after a week's suspension following charges of battery and disturbing the peace.

Tadvick was suspended indefinitely from the team after an alleged fight between football players, a UI student and members of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He was charged with allegedly punching ATO member Bryan Boatman in the back of the head and throwing beer bottles at the fraternity house...

Homecoming didn't leave the U in the red

Some leaders of the Greek scene supported the rule. Drinking games "cause an environment that will force people to consume alcohol faster than they normally would," Alpha Tau Omega President Ray Radovich, a junior, said. "So I think from that standpoint it's a good rule"...

Radovich said that he thought the most common drinking games on campus were card games and Beirut. He said they were less prevalent than others think, though. "They happen but they're not the focus of any of the social scenes," he said. "The focus is on people getting together in groups and having a good time."...

... Drew Hauber, a ... member of Alpha Tau Omega, was one of the first to have a serious accident. As he came around the final turn, Hauber was unable to stop and hit the fence surrounding the track. The fence stopped the tricycle, but not Hauber. He was flipped over the fence and onto the grass on the other side.

Determined to finish the race, Hauber got back on the bike and rode across the finish line. Alpha Tau Omega decided to keep their time despite the accident...

Greek teams vie to raise funds for Make-A-Wish Foundation

Eleven teams representing different greek organizations showed up for some music, food and soccer... the real purpose of this event was not to see who won the tournament - it was to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan through Chi Omega sorority's 6th annual Karen King Kickoff.

A group called the MSU Stars was the first collegiate organization formed to support the foundation. The group was started more than three years ago by MSU student Jonathan Rosenthal, a former member of Alpha Tau Omega...

Third-year law & society major Matt Rousso is the former president of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, which coordinates the annual All Sorority Volleyball Tournament, a charity event held in Greek Park. He said he thinks the new commission will help his fraternity communicate better with the different agencies that must approve plans for this year's event.

Deputy Accused of Drunken Pepper Spray Attack Has Car Vandalized

Last week, a Dona Ana County Sheriff Deputy was charged with pepper spraying several people at an NMSU Fraternity. Just this weekend, ABC-7 was told that deputy's car has been vandalized...

Deputy Barde was off duty on September 27th at the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house at NMSU. Several fraternity brothers told police that Deputy Barde was quote - "obviously drunk" when he allegedly shot pepper spray inside the house, injuring several...

Coincidence or Not?

Las Cruces Police are wondering if there's a connection between a vandalized Dona Ana Deputy Sheriff's patrol car and the deputy's involvement in a pepper spray attack on some fraternity members last month...

The fraternity members who say they were attacked by the deputy say they had nothing to do with the vandalism. Alpha Tau Omega President Mike Gallegos says he doesn't know who trashed the car and says most of his members were out of town last weekend...

Deputy charged with frat assault

A Doņa Ana County sheriff's deputy (David R. Barde) was charged Thursday with several counts of assault stemming from a Sept. 27 incident in which he allegedly entered a New Mexico State University fraternity house and shot pepper spray at several men inside of the building...

Police arrived at the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house on the NMSU campus just before 1 a.m. on Sept. 27 and found five fraternity members with bloodshot, watery, burning eyes and coughs consistent with having been shot with pepper spray, court records state. The fraternity members said a man entered the building and began shooting pepper spray into the air. When confronted, he said he was "having fun" and shot the pepper spray at the men...

... there are "bed races" throughout the country at other schools, but this is Baylor's first time to host such an event...

As social chair for Alpha Tau Omega, Clear Lake senior Drew Snyder has been instrumental in organizing the event.
"The idea for Bed Races was proposed to me by Amy Reeves, the assistant director for Student Activities," Snyder said, "She said she had been looking for an organization to help her promote and run the event. We said we would do it, and it blossomed from there."

Funds tagged for frats' move

The money to reimburse five fraternities on Lumpkin Street for their houses likely will come from unallocated funds in the University's (U of Georgia) general budget, the University's budget director said Monday... Although the fraternities do not own their houses, the University intends to pay the chapters for the equity in the homes...

The chapters that choose to move to River Road will be occupying land where other fraternity houses once stood.
Bennett said Sigma Nu and Alpha Tau Omega had houses on River Road before the University had them move off campus...

Returning to brotherhood

Alpha Tau Omega, which left campus in 1997, became a colony at OU on Sunday and plans to gain a charter on OU's campus faster than any Alpha Tau Omega chapter.

"When a fraternity is attempting to come to campus, they become a colony," said Jeremy Black, Interfraternity Council adviser. "Then, when they meet requirements of nationals, then nationals will consider them a charter and give them recognition as a full member of Alpha Tau Omega"...

Symons' friends pool energy

Steve Symons' voice sounds distant and melancholy on the phone, because he's worn down from chemotherapy..

Symons, NDSU [web/tickets/eBay] junior... was diagnosed with bone cancer ... that caused his leg to be amputated Aug. 5. Before the diagnosis, Symons was president of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity... "I'll be in chemo for another three, four months, through February ... I'm on a break for a couple days. I have another round Monday and the week after that . it's never ending."

Brandon Oye and Leighton Mohl, members of ATO, are among the first contributors to the fundraising organization called Go Steve...

Alpha Tau Omega 'sets stage' for ISU Greeks

"ATO is the first fraternity to build a house next to campus and has set the stage for other chapters, fraternities and sororities to follow," Al Perone, dean of student affairs said...

Jason Williams, a junior automotive technology management major and Alpha Tau Omega vice president, thanked everyone on behalf of the active chapter. "With 25 brothers living in the house, the opportunities are endless," Williams said.

The ribbon cutting ceremony opened the doors for a tour of the house. Allen Tamar class of 1981 toured the new house and reflected on his days at ISU as an ATO. "Brings back great memories, seeing a lot of mementoes here, seeing good friends, had a great time at university. We had academic part to prepare for the future but the other part was having good times and good friends. These are the memories you hold dear as you get older"...
